Administrative/Biographical History
Caledonian Breweries Ltd, Edinburgh, Scotland, was incorporated under the Companies Act of 1948 as a limited liability company on 29 April 1960. It was created as a wholly owned subsidiary of Northern Breweries of Great Britain Ltd, based in York, North Yorkshire, England and London, England, in order to manage on behalf of the parent firm five Scottish breweries: George Younger & Son Ltd of Alloa, Scotland; John Fowler & Co Ltd of Prestonpans, Scotland; William Murray & Co Ltd of Edinburgh, Scotland; John Aitchison & Co Ltd of Edinburgh and John Jeffrey & Co Ltd of Edinburgh. Although the firms were to continue to trade under their own names, Caledonian Breweries Ltd managed the production for the group as well as advertising and marketing.
Caledonian Breweries Ltd appears to have been the immediate predecessor of United Caledonian Breweries Ltd, which merged in 1962 with Charrington & Co Ltd of London, England through a holding company, Charrington United Breweries Ltd. In 1966 United Caledonian Breweries merged with J & R Tennent Ltd to form Tennent Caledonian Breweries Ltd.
Although the Caledonian Breweries Ltd did not trade from 1965 onwards, it remained a dormant company until 1968 when it was probably dissolved.
