Administrative/Biographical History

Bellshill Maternity Hospital was built by Bothwell Parochial Board in the 1870s. It became a Lanarkshire County hospital in 1899. Originally Bellshill was an Infectious Diseases hospital. It began to be re–developed as a maternity hospital in 1917. Calderbank House Hospital near Baillieston functioned as an annexe of Bellshill Maternity Hospital between 1919 and 1964. When it joined the National Health Service in 1948, Bellshill was placed under the Board of Management for Coatbridge, Airdrie and District Hospitals. New hospital buildings were opened between 1958 and 1962. At the National Health Service re-organisation in 1974 Bellshill passed to the Monklands and Cumbernauld District of Lanarkshire Health Board.
