Administrative/Biographical History

Lanarkshire Health Board was established when Lanark County Council was created under the Local Government (Scotland) Act of 1889. Public health was the responsibility of District Committees of the Council and full time Medical Officers of Health and Sanitary Inspectors were appointed by the Council. The Local Government (Scotland) Act of 1929 abolished the District Committees. District Boards of Control were also abolished and their responsibilities for mental health transferred to the County Council. In 1948 the Council’s hospitals were nationalised and in 1974 most of its remaining responsibilities for public health were transferred to the National Health Service.
