Administrative/Biographical History

Glasgow Town Council built Belvidere Hospital as an infectious diseases hospital. It opened in 1870-1871 with a bed capacity of 250 (and 366 patients). Rebuilding and extensions continued until 1901. Belvidere remained primarily an infectious diseases hospital until after the creation of the National Health Service in 1948, when it was placed under the Board of Management for Glasgow Royal Infirmary.

In the early 1950s the treatment of poliomylitis patients lead to pioneering work in the creation of Intensive Care Units. A respiratory medicine unit was opened in 1954, the Regional Limb-Fitting Centre in 1960, a maternity unit in 1962, a regional radiotherapy centre in 1961-1973 and an orthopaedic unit in 1967. In 1974 Belvidere was placed in the Eastern District of the Greater Glasgow Health Board. Belvidere Hospital became a general geriatric hospital before closing in 1999.
