Administrative/Biographical History

Built in 1902-1904 by the combined City and Barony Parish for the treatment of acute medical and surgical cases, the Western District Hospital was commonly known as Oakbank Hospital. Oakbank was sited on a triangular plot bounded by Possil Road, Garscube Road and a canal. Oakbank became a Glasgow Corporation hospital in 1930 and joined the National Health Service in 1948 under the Board of Management for Glasgow Northern Hospitals. The Western District Hospital closed in 1965. The buildings were temporarily used as the Royal Hospital for Sick Children between 1966 and 1971, during re-building at Yorkhill.
