Administrative/Biographical History

The Hospital for Mental and Nervous Disorders in Beirut, Lebanon (for some years the only psychiatric hospital in the Middle East) was opened in 1900. It relied heavily on funds raised outside Lebanon and had a central committee which was based in London and on which Dr MacNiven of Glasgow served. In 1948, it opened a School of Psychiatric Nursing, the first of its kind in the Middle East. The hospital closed c.1982 but the London Committee continued to operate in a trusteeship role in respect of trust funds held in the UK.
