Administrative/Biographical History

Barbara Anne Burnett Ewing was born Barbara Cumming in 1949. She was educated at Strone and Ardentiny Primary School from 1954–1961 and St Bride’s School for Girls in Helensburgh from 1961–1966. She began her nursing career as a student nurse at Victoria Hospital in Rothesay from 1967–1969, her first post was as a student midwife at Robroyston Hospital in Glasgow from 1969–1971. Barbara Ewing became a State Enrolled Nurse in 1969 and then a State Certified Midwife in 1971. She was midwife at the Rankin Memorial Hospital, Greenock then at Victoria Hospital, Rothesay, 1971–1974. She married Robert Ewing in 1972, and retired to Rothesay to start a family in 1974.
