Administrative/Biographical History

Note: records relating to poor house inmates are held by Renfrewshire Archives (see contact details).

Opened as the Asylum of the Abbey Parish Poor House in 1851, this psychiatric institution existed alongside general hospital facilities which were erected in 1890. The whole complex was known as Craw Road Institution but few if any records survive in respect of general medicine. The psychiatric wards remained under Renfrew Board of Control in 1930 (when other wards were transferred to Paisley Town Council), in 1948 they passed to the Renfrewshire Mental Hospitals Board of Management.
